LINEHAND, Linemen, Lineman?

Who are these guys? What do they really do?

cover  photo- James Hall & Gary Peterson, photographed  by Mario Saragosa

Eighteen year-old Glade Elliott stands among a group of men gazing up at a daunting sight, a narrow pole planted in the ground and shooting straight up into the sky.  The gruff superintendent in charge holds up a set of "climbers" and a belt. "Who's first? he asks.
Glade wanders into an electrifying world, unknown to most.  A world of high places and lethal high voltage.  Many know what a lineman is, a person that climbs poles and works on overhead lines, yet few have any accurate concept of training required or the dangers faced.  The work is all outdoors, along streets and highways, in every kind of weather, all hours of the day and night, and every day of the year.
Adventure and agony, love and despair travel the strange road with young Glade as he seeks to join this unique brotherhood. He finds friendship and adventure, but faces death and injury as he discovers the world of tramp linemen.
The story takes place in the 1950s, the middle of the twentieth century, the electric century. The period that began with outhouses, pitcher pumps, and kerosene lanterns, while the end of the century found a much different way of life - an electrified society.

The story of a young man in the mid '50s and how he became a Lineman in the period that straddled the age of the men that became linemen by climbing a pole and the advent of the apprenticeship programs and the organization of the trade.
LINEHAND  looks at the before and after of the evolution of the trade, the linehands and conditions that channeled that development.   The men and women that provided the experiences for young Glade Elliott as he entered the world of high voltages and high places.  If you are in the trade, you will recognize the linehands, not the particular individuals, but the people you would find on the construction job or the Bull Room of every electric utility yard in the country.

The year was 1953.  Eighteen-year-old Glade Elliott stands among a group of men, gazing up at a daunting sight, a narrow pole, planted in the ground shooting straight up into the sky. The gruff superintendent in charge holds up a set of "climbers" and a belt. "Who’s first?" he asks. After watching several men awkwardly attempt to climb the pole and struggle nervously to get back down to solid ground, Glade accepts the challenge. With youthful agility and swiftness, he gallops up to the top of the pole and carefully climbs back down. Little does Glade realize that this skillful display will change the course of his young life. (see more)

"Anyone who's worked with electricity should enjoy reading LINEHAND, but laypersons will find it educational and entertaining as well. Apprentice lineman Glade Elliott makes an appealing guide in a story full of interesting characters. I'll never look at a string of electric wires in the same way again."
Carol Cail,  author of the Maxey Burnell mystery series

"LINEHAND  brings back many memories of my forty years in the hooks. This is a great tale and a piece of history for all linemen. This will be the next classic for those that climb and work the power lines. It is the next SLIM, and long overdue."
                                                          Robert Bishop, lineman (retired)
